Spondylolysis

Spondylolysis

Spondylolysis is a condition that occurs when there is a defect or stress fracture in the bones of the lower spine, known as the pars interarticularis. This can cause the vertebrae to become unstable and shift out of place, which is known as spondylolisthesis. Spondylolysis is most commonly seen in young athletes who participate in sports that involve a lot of repetitive stress on the lower spine, such as gymnastics, football, and weightlifting. Treatment for spondylolysis may include rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. It is important to speak with a doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of spondylolysis.

What can cause Spondylolysis?

Spondylolysis is typically caused by repetitive stress on the lower spine, which can weaken the bones and lead to a defect or stress fracture in the pars interarticularis. This condition is most commonly seen in young athletes who participate in sports that involve a lot of repetitive stress on the lower spine, such as gymnastics, football, and weightlifting. Other factors that may increase the risk of spondylolysis include:

  • Genetics, as certain inherited conditions may make an individual more susceptible to the condition
  • Abnormalities in the spine, such as a congenital defect or developmental abnormality
  • Overuse of the lower back muscles, such as in athletes who engage in a high volume of training without adequate rest and recovery

It is important to speak with a doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of spondylolysis, so that a proper diagnosis can be made and appropriate treatment can be provided.
