Sciatica
Sciatica
Sciatica is a term used to describe pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down the legs. Sciatica is typically caused by a compressed or irritated nerve in the lower spine, which can be due to a variety of factors, such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or a bone spur. Sciatica can cause a range of symptoms, including pain, numbness, and weakness in the lower back, buttocks, and legs. Treatment for sciatica may include medications, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. It is important to speak with a doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of sciatica.
What can cause Sciatic?
Sciatica is typically caused by a compressed or irritated nerve in the lower spine. This can be due to a variety of factors, including:
- A herniated disc, or a disc that has bulged out of place and is pressing on the sciatic nerve
- Spinal stenosis, or a narrowing of the spinal canal that can compress the sciatic nerve
- Bone spurs, or bony growths that can form on the vertebrae and press on the sciatic nerve
- Piriformis syndrome, or a condition in which the piriformis muscle, which is located in the buttocks, compresses the sciatic nerve
- Trauma or injury to the lower spine, such as a car accident or fall
It is important to speak with a doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of sciatica, so that a proper diagnosis can be made and appropriate treatment can be provided.
